Quilligans travelled out to the delightful village of Wrea Green for a league game against the Premier League newcomers. Quilligans have several regulars missing for various reasons and made four changes from the side that won the Gledhill semi-final.
Catlow and Spedding were suspended and Palmer and Ioannou injured. Danny Rowe was also not considered fit enough to start. Quilligans brought in five players from the youth team with Anthony Stayte and Chris Taylor starting the game and Jordan Douthwaite coming on early due to Paul Cook limping off injured.
Stayte's free kick nearly caught their keeper napping and Quilligans were pressing and forcing the early running. They were rewarded after 15 minutes when Athony Pearson fired home from a narrow angle.
Wrea Green were also looking dangerous and keeping the Quilligans defence on their toes, they equalised after 35 mins when a sloppy backpass from midfield was cut out and sent in off the far post past Clowes.
Half-time 1-1
The second half started with Clowes pulling off a great save to deny Wrea Green but Quilligans were starting to look the more dangerous side, with Douthwaite and Corless causing them problems on the flanks. Quilligans then introduced Danny Rowe who had an immediate impact as his inswinging corner went directly in to the net to put Quilligans 2-1 up.
Wrea Green pressed but the Quilligans defence stood firm and they almost got a third when a last gasp tackle on Corless saved them. In the final seconds Rowe had a great chance with the keeper out of the net but couldn't get the ball under control.
In summary an excellent win with so many players missing. Newcomers Douthwaite and Stayte were superb and Chris Taylor, home from University for the week was rock solid at the back.
Full-time 1-2.
