Nearly into October and this was only the third game of the new league campaign on a pitch which looked liked it was nearing the end of a hard season. Manager Spedding put out a strong side for today's visit by Northern Care, with Broadbent returning after a recent operation.

Within a couple of minutes of the kick off, Quilligans had the first chance of note - Rowe forcing a smart save from the Northern Care keeper. The resultant corner was cleared to Palmer whose trademark volley from almost 25 yards found the net via a deflection from Sugden who claimed the goal. Pearson had the ball in the net shortly after but the referee disallowed it for handball.

Northern Care responded with a couple of efforts - a header and a delicate lob going agonisingly close. Sugden then forced a good save from the Northern Care keeper, then his opposite number Clowes had to be at his best brilliantly tipping over a header from a well worked short corner.
Just after the quarter hour mark Quilligans were two to the good. A Boal shot was only parried by the Northern Care keeper, and the predatory Sugden was on hand to sidefoot home the rebound.

With 15 minutes remaining of the half it was 3-0. Gorrie was scythed down in the area for a cast iron penalty. Pearson coolly converted on both occasions having been ordered to retake the kick by the referee.

Shortly after Sugden was booked for simulation, a harsh decision given that Sugden didn't appeal for a penalty, then Pearson forced another smart save from the Northern Care keeper. Just before half-time Northern Care were awarded a penalty for a push in the area. However, Clowes saved well albeit a poorly taken penalty.

Half-time 3-0.
The second half panned out fairly evenly early doors. Both sides have chances mainly from long range, with both keepers having to make saves. Broadbent replaced Pearson on 70 minutes, and moments later Palmer was sent off, given a straight red reducing Quilligans to 10 men, presumably for something he said to the referee.
Swallow replaced Ioannou on 75 minutes. Northern Care tried to salvage some pride, and went close when Green clipped a free kick just past the upright. It was short lived though, a great run by Roberts found substitute Swallow who in turn got to the byline and fired in a pinpoint cross for the onrushing Gorrie to head home - 4-0.
Northern Care responded within a couple of minutes and reduced the arrears, when a good ball into the Quilligans area was headed past Clowes.

But with a couple of minutes left a mistake in the Northern Care rearguard saw Roberts clean through, however, the keeper and defender combined well to put Roberts off. However, the ball fell to Broadbent and he made no mistake slamming the loose ball home. 5-1.
Full time 5-1.
As Arkwrights have resigned from the Preston League, Quilligans will play Additions in a league game at Collins Park on 30 September.
