Quilligans made the short trip to Blackpool Mechanics for this league encounter against Northern Care (NC), this being the fourth time this season Quilligans have played them, with NC still looking for their first win. In fact, in the various guises as the Oxford, Whiteheads TV, The Clarence and NC, they have never beaten Quilligans in about 30 attempts, an amazing statistic.
Quilligans had a weak side out today with Thompson, Bracewell, Roberts, Pearson, West and Sugden unavailable, new signing Jordan Spedding ineligble and to make matters worse Broadbent limped off after ten minutes. NC also were not at full strength with the Horse and Kenny Cram absent from proceedings.
Quilligans had the advantage of the wind in the first half and it was pretty much one way traffic as Quilligans used the wind to good effect and created a host of chances. However, a combination of some fine goalkeeping by Jamie Cook, the woodwork and some bad misses - most notably by Gareth Moore who managed to miss from three yards out kept the scores level.
Catlow's rasping free kick thudded against the bar as the pressure mounted on the NC back four. Fitzpatrick was doing his best to get the game abandoned due to a loss of match balls as he hoofed everything that came to him over the fence and on to the airport. Quilligans finally broke the deadlock as Catlow's inswinging corner was headed in at the far post by Docker Brooks.
Half-time 0-1.
Second half and still NC could make no headway as the Quilligans back line stood firm and pressed on for the crucial second goal. However NC did strike back to equalise as Carroll's long throw was not dealt with and the diminutive former Quilligans striker Andy Hill stabbed in the leveller.
This was one of NC very rare opportunities and Quilligans should have been home and dry before this, but in football it is a commom theme. However, Quilligans pressed on for the winner and it came with ten minutes to go. A slide rule pass from Paul Cook was chested down by debutant Chris Coreless and he struck a right footed winner in off the far post to settle the match.
Full-time 1-2.
On reflection an improved performance by Quilligans, missed chances almost costing them 2 points, but a thouroughly deserved win to maintain their 100% start to the season in the league.
