Quilligans made the short journey to Wren Rovers to play Highfield Social in the league. A win would put them top of the league, and with rivals Layton and Poulton having tricky away games, possibly a chance to put more daylight between us and them in the title race.
Once again Quilligans had a weakened side on show as injuries took their toll with Cook, Sugden, Thompson, Gorrie and Brooks interested spectators (but smartly dressed ones ready for the Easter Sunday all dayer). However, Quilligans welcomed back some absentees from last week.
The first half was dominated by Quilligans with Steve Palmer back from injury going close on a couple of occasions. The closest being when Catlow's fine free kick picked him out on the edge of the six yard box and Brookie made an excellent save to thwart him.
Highfield had nothing of note in the first half, but after the break had their best spell of the match, highlighted by an excellent double save from Josh Woods which was crucial.
Quilligans started turning up the heat and a fine move involving Palmer and Boal ended with Lee Catlow slotting the ball past Brooks for a 1-0 lead after 64 minutes.
This seemed to spur Quilligans on and deflate Highfield. Before long it was 2-0 as substitute Danny Rowe superbly picked out Catlow at the far post for him to volley home.
After that it could have ended six or seven as Quilligans wasted a raft of chances, but settled for 2-0 and an important three points as rivals slipped up elsewhere.
In summary a good win for Quilligans, although we were once again well short of players due to injuries. The lads played with a determination and passion to keep their 100% league record intact and move another step closer to retaining the title.
