The Oxford FC 0 v 5 Quilligans FC

 

It was touch and go as to whether Quilligans would play their first game of the 2009/10 League campaign against The Oxford after their sponsorship problems. Fortunately, they were resolved in time for today's game, and The Oxford got proceedings under way at a blustery Wren Rovers.

It wasn't long before Quilligans opened their account in their assault on capturing the League title back from incumbents Blackpool Rangers. Great work by Gorrie on the flank led to a fine low ball across the face of the Oxford goal, which was met by the onrushing Greenall who slammed home.

Just after the quarter hour Quilligans doubled their lead. A good ball from Ford found Evans who fired across the keeper into the bottom left corner. Two minutes later Douthwaite turned superbly on a sixpence and blasted home to put Quilligans in a commanding position.

The Oxford's chances were few and far between, but none of them troubled Speight in the Quilligans goal. Greenall had an opportunity to double his tally but draged his effort wide of the post.

On the half hour mark Quilligans made it 4-0. A majestic clipped ball from Cook which was met by the impressive Evans, and his looping header over the oncoming keeper nestled into the back of the Oxford's net.

Before the break Quilligans had further chances through Evans and Slater but could not add to their lead

Half-time 0-4.

Evans started the second half as he did the first testing the Oxford keeper with a pile driver and then sending another effort just wide. Cook then went close heading just over from a corner.

Just before the hour mark Quilligans wrapped the game up. Greenall headed back across the Oxford goal, where Douthwaite swivelled and volleyed home from inside the area.

Quilligans then started to ring the changes bringing off Cook, Ford and Douthwaite and replacing them with Porter, Brooks and Faber.

Quilligans could have added to the total, but towards the end took their foot of the gas a little, but all in all a good opening day result.
