Quilligans came away from Cottam Hall with three valuable points against a determined prison based side, as they were forced to make six changes from the side that blasted Gardeners Arms 6-0 at the weekend.
Even with injuries and players working away taking its toll on the team Quilligans opened up the better side and it was no surprise when Steve Ralston's penalty gave the visitors a 1-0.
It soon became 2-0 as Grant Dell ghosted in a the far post to head the second to give Quilligans a comfortable.
Half time 0-2.
Quilligans carried on playing neat football on the small pitch after the break. A nice floated ball in to the box saw Michael Clark make a great run and put Quilligans firmly in charge - 0-3.
Newton Arms refused to lie down and their Skem striker Fearns tricked Taberner in to a lunge in the box. He duly picked himself up and pulled a goal back from the spot.
Quilligans then missed three great chances to seal the game as the Newton Arms ploughed forward to get back in to the game. Fearns once more got the wrong side of Quilligans defence who missed the presence of skipper Phil Thompson and pulled another goal back with seconds remaining to give the scoreline some respectability.
In summary, a hard fought win against a physical and determined side. Newton Arms will be a difficult game for teams this season if they have the same side out as tonight.
Unfortunately for them they miss players when they are on home leave, but if you are unlucky enough to play them at full strength, expect a battle. Once more Mark Butler was outstanding in Quilligans midfield, playing through injury, which speaks volumes for the lads character.
