Gardeners Arms FC 0 v 6 Quilligans FC

Quilligans FC took on the Gardeners Arms FC at Thornton Sports Centre today, hoping for another victory after demolishing Fleetwood Gym on the opening day of the season. It wouldn't be an easy task with Gardeners finishing last season in third spot only 3 points behind LFA Trophy winners Poulton SFC, and beating FC Loco on the opening day.

Match Action

The first half hour of the game was pretty uneventful and devoid of clear cut chances - Pearson punching away a long range Gardeners effort, a Broadbent header which was deflected away and a headed effort from Thompson which flew just over.

On 33 minutes Quilligans took the lead from a Gardeners error. A goal kick was sent straight at Broadbent 20 yards out. He gathered the ball, turned quickly and lashed an unstoppable effort into the top corner.

Match Action

A minute later Quilligans doubled their lead. A ball into the box by Dell, was met by Evans who had ghosted into the box evading his marker, and hooked the ball into the top corner. Just before half-time Quilligans made it 0-3. Clark was brought down in the area and Broadbent confidently converted the resultant penalty.

Match Action

Half-time 0-3.

Manager Spedding made several substitutions early into the second period, with Ford, Watt and Spedding joining the fray. Dell was causing havoc with his blistering pace all match and was unlucky not to open his account when he had an effort cleared off the line.

Match Action

Gardeners had chances to get back into the game, but none really threatened Pearson in the Quilligans goal. Spedding grabbed a goal to make it 0-4 after Baird had coolly picked him out in the area finishing with aplomb.

Match Action

Broadbent was chasing his hatrick and was unfortunate not to do so when the Gardeners keeper made a smart save palming another blistering effort away. Baird made it 0-5 with 11 minutes remaining heading home from close range.

With minutes remaining Gardeners were awarded a penalty and given the chance of a consolation. Pearson, however, had other ideas and superbly parried the penalty away to preserve a clean sheet.

Match Action

Just before the final whistle Baird completed his brace lifting the ball over the Gardeners keeper and into the net.
