Quilligans FC 8 v 0 Fleetwood Gym FC

Quilligans opened their title defence by destroying Fleetwood Gym 8-0 at School Lane today. They included new signing Mark Butler, Mike Braebaum and Grant Dell in the starting line up as well as newbies Steve Betteridge, Michael Clark on the bench.

After a sketchy start from both sides, Phil Thompson opening the scoring for Quilligans after 20 minutes by guiding his header home after a superb Nick Greenall free kick found him free of his marker in the box.

Match Action

Quilligans the settled down and it was no surprise when a superb move ended with Marc Beattie crossing for Mickey Evans to fire home after 28 minutes, 2-0 to Quilligans and Fleetwood Gym having a mountain to climb.

Somehow Fleetwood managed to stop further damage before half time as Quilligans cut them open time after, debutant Grant Dell causing mayhem down the right wing and Evans and Beattie pace being difficult for them to handle.

Half-time: 2-0.

As the second half wore on it was only a matter of time before Quilligans opened up once more, and this time there would be no escape. A brace apiece by Beattie and Evans plus a goal each from Broadbent and Clark hammered home Quilligans' superiority to give them three points and a great start to the season.

Match Action

On reflection, an excellent opening performance from the Champions. Quilligans looked nicely balanced with Tommo and Braebaum's experience steadying the defence. Butler once more put in a good shift in the middle of the park and looks a useful addition for the club, and new signing 18 year old Grant Dell showed a lot of promise with his pace down the wing causing havoc.

Match Action

Beattie and Evans up front were a handful all day with their pace and hunger scoring five between them, and Lee Broadbent showed signs of getting his fitness back capped by scoring a peach of a goal to round off his day.
