Sanuk FC went in to 2012 hoping to erase the memory of the Gledhill Trophy exit in
their last game and the disappointment of missing out on Bloomfield Road
for the first time in many years.
They made the short trip to Common Edge number one pitch to face the long the established Bloomfield Vets club, who include ex-Blackpool midfielder Andy Gouck in their ranks. Alongside him, the equally experienced and well know pesterer of referees ex-Quilligans star Terry Green.
Fortunately, the high winds of recent days had died down and the conditions were ideal for football. Sanuk gave debuts to former player Dave Mendonca and recent signing John Beavers from Fleetwood Gym. Mendonca going straight in to the team up front with Jordan Spedding and John starting on the bench.
Sanuk made a fast start and had Bloomfield under early pressure. This was rewarded when a poor clearance fell to Pearson some 25 yards out and he pinged a daisy cutter low and hard in to the bottom right hand corner of the net to put Sanuk 1-0 up.
Sanuk continued to play some nice football and the strong team spirit was evident as they worked hard for each other, clearly benefiting greatly from releasing some time wasters that we had at the club.
The second goal was not long in coming. Excellent work down the left from Dicko, and his cross shot could not be kept out by a defender as Sanuk took a stranglehold on the game at half time.
Half-time 0-2.
Sanuk had the advantage of the light breeze in the second half and they continued to press for more goals. All credit to Bloomfield who defended really well to keep Sanuk out with Terry Green organising their defence excellently.
Dave Mendonca showed his turn of pace as he chased a lost cause and managed to nudge the ball past a startled keeper, and send a low cross to the far post where strike partner Jordan Spedding had the easiest of chances to knock home the third.
In summary, a good, solid performance from the Champions. New signings Mendonca and Beavers look good acquisitions, both fit and committed players, exactly what is needed by the team. A couple more are expected to sign during the January transfer window to bring us up to full strength.
Tommo, Fordy and Douthy made sure the chances of conceding were remote as Bloomfield failed to create anything in attack, and the midfield was its usual excellent self with Pearson catching the eye - how we missed him in the last game.
Referee John Hornsby once more showed the correct way to referee Sunday football. Choosing to keep his cards in his pocket and speak respectfully to both sets of players, which in turn kept the game flowing and a pleasure to watch.
